Script Bots and Smart Bots

A chatbot is the most common application of NLP you will actually have used. There are two kinds, and the board hands you a description and asks which one it is.

1What a chatbot is

Chatbot
A computer program designed to simulate human conversation through voice commands, text chats or both. It can learn over time how best to interact with humans, and is used to answer questions, troubleshoot customer problems, qualify prospects and generate sales leads.

2The two kinds

Two kinds of chatbot

The board describes one and asks you to name it, so read these as descriptions rather than definitions.

Script Bot
  • Works around a script it was programmed with
  • Easy to make, and needs little or no coding
  • No or very little language processing skill
  • Limited functionality — it cannot go beyond its script
  • Does not learn from the conversation

Examples: The help bot on a shopping website that answers a fixed list of questions.

The words that give it away: learns, experience, databases and coding required all point to a smart bot. Script, predefined and limited point to a script bot.

A note on the textbook
The Class X handbook names both types, says “let us understand what each of them means in detail” — and then goes straight to the quiz without giving the comparison. The wording above follows the board papers’ own descriptions, since those are what you will be marked against.

3From the board papers

1
Which type of chat bot requires coding and works on bigger databases directly?
(A) Script bot (B) Smart bot (C) Traditional bot (D) Rule-based botCBSE board exam 2026
1 mark
▶Show the answer

(B) Smart bot. Both clues point the same way: coding required, and reaching databases beyond its own script. Note that (C) and (D) are just other names for a script bot.

2
Identify the given chatbot type: “It learns from its environment and experience. It also builds on its capabilities based on the knowledge. These can collaborate with humans, working alongside them and learning from their behaviour.”CBSE sample papers 2023–24 and 2024–25
1 mark
▶Show the answer

Smart bot. Learns, experience and builds on its capabilities are all things a script bot cannot do — a script bot does what it was told once and no more.

3
A bot that answers a fixed list of frequently asked questions on a clothing website, and replies “Sorry, I can’t help you with that” to anything else, is a ________ bot.Practice — built from the rule-based chatbot in Unit 2
1 mark
▶Show the answer

Script bot. It has a predefined set of questions and answers, cannot go beyond them, and does not learn from the failure. This is the same example the rule-based approach used in Unit 2 — a script bot is a rule based model.
