What is Evaluation?
In modelling you can build several different models. So which one is better? Nothing you have learnt so far can answer that. That is what this whole unit is for.
1What evaluation is
🔑Model evaluation
Model evaluation is the process of using different evaluation metrics to understand a machine learning model’s performance. It is an integral part of the model development process: it helps to find the best model that represents our data, and how well that model will work in the future.
📋
The report card
Your school report does not just say “good” or “bad”. It has grades, percentages, percentiles and a rank — several different measures of the same student. Reading it, you know which subject to work on. Model evaluation is exactly that for an AI model, and the different metrics in this unit are the different columns of the report.
2The feedback loop
An AI model gets better with constructive feedback. The cycle is:
Build a model.
Get feedback from the metrics.
Make improvements.
Go back to step 2, and keep going until you reach an accuracy you are happy with.
📝Why it matters beyond the marks
Evaluation tells you a model’s strengths, its weaknesses, and whether it is suitable for the task at hand. That feedback loop is what makes an AI system trustworthy and reliable rather than merely finished.
3Where it sits in the cycle
Evaluation is stage 5 of the AI Project Cycle, after modelling and before deployment. It is deliberately placed there: you evaluate before you put the model in front of real people.
🔄 The six stages, as a cycle
Tap a stage to stand on it, or press play and watch the work go round. Drag sideways to turn.
5. Evaluation — Test the model on newly fetched data it has never seen, and judge how well it does.
It answers: Does it actually work on data it has not met?
⚠️Deploying without evaluating
If you skip this stage you have no idea whether the model works. It may be right almost always, or almost never, and nothing about the finished software looks any different. Real people would be the ones to find out — which is exactly the situation the ethical frameworks in Unit 1 exist to prevent.

Model evaluation (or simply evaluation). The sentence is the definition almost word for word, so it is worth learning in that form.

What is model evaluation in machine learning, and how does it help improve an AI model?CBSE sample paper 2025–26

▶Show the answer
Model evaluation is the process of using different evaluation metrics to understand how a machine learning model is performing, and how well it is likely to work on future data. It improves the model by giving constructive feedback: you build a model, read the metrics, see where it is weak, make improvements, and repeat until the accuracy is acceptable.

What will happen if you deploy an AI model without evaluating it with known test set data?Class X handbook, Reflection Time

You would have no measure of whether the model actually works. It could be making wrong predictions constantly and nobody would know until real users were affected — and with no metrics there is no way to tell where it is going wrong or how to improve it. Evaluation is what turns an untested model into a trustworthy one.
