Which Domain Is This?
Every year the paper gives you a small story and asks which domain it belongs to. The story is always longer than it needs to be. You only have to find one thing in it.
1The one question
Numbers, records, a table → Statistical Data
A photo, a video, a camera → Computer Vision
Typed or spoken words → Natural Language Processing
Pick a domain and it rises. What is standing on the pedestal is the data that domain is fed. Drag sideways to turn.
2Side by side
| Statistical Data | Computer Vision | NLP | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fed with | Numbers, tables, records | Images, video, sensor pictures | Written and spoken words |
| Machine learns to | Find meaning in data | See | Read and listen |
| CBSE's example | Price comparison websites | Agricultural monitoring, surveillance | Email filters, machine translation |
| Everyday example | Weather prediction | Face unlock | Voice assistant |
Watch for extra options that are not domains at all. “Robotics” and “Recommendation Systems” have both appeared as wrong choices. There are only three domains.
