1969 · ARPANET is born. Four university computers in the USA are connected — UCLA, SRI, UCSB and the University of Utah.

Four university computers in the USA are connected — UCLA, SRI, UCSB and the University of Utah.

1971Fifteen sites, and the first email

ARPANET has grown to 15 sites, and Ray Tomlinson sends the first email between computers on it — using the @ sign.

1973Across the ocean

ARPANET reaches beyond the USA for the first time: Norway and London join, over a satellite link.

1983One common language: TCP/IP

ARPANET switches to TCP/IP, the set of rules for sending data that the Internet still uses today.

1986NSFNET

The National Science Foundation links six supercomputer centres with a faster network, open to every university.

1988NSFNET speeds up

Its backbone is upgraded to 1.5 Mbps, and regional networks of colleges across the USA join it.

1990ARPANET switched off

Its job has passed to NSFNET, and the original network is shut down.

1991The World Wide Web

Tim Berners-Lee's World Wide Web, built at CERN in Geneva, goes public — web pages you open with a browser.

1995The Internet goes commercial — and reaches India

NSFNET is retired and companies take over running the Internet. On 15 August 1995, VSNL opens public internet access in India.

3Writing it in an exam

A short-answer question such as “Write a short note on the evolution of networking” wants the three names, their years and one line on each. For example:

ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) was started in 1969 by the US Department of Defense to connect computers at universities and research centres. In 1986 the National Science Foundation built NSFNET, a faster network open to all universities and researchers, and ARPANET was shut down in 1990. In the 1990s networks all over the world joined through NSFNET and other networks using TCP/IP, forming the Internet — a global network of networks, open to everyone.
